Do you want your child to be more understanding?
The past few posts that I have written are for you, parents. Usually as parents, you ask children to do this and that, sometimes without regarding how they feel. This post follows that. If you want your child to be more understanding, to develop empathy, there's no need to send your child to a children's home, a teenage's reformative unit, or an old age home. You can start right in your home just by practising seeing things from your children's point of view. Richard Templar has suggested this as Attitude Rule 19 in his book, The Rules of Parenting.
Children learn by imitating. If, as parents, we can practise more understanding, your children can see and feel it and will become more understanding over time.
China Fuerdai
In China, many news articles have written about the Chinese's fuerdai - the children of China's richest politicians and businessmen. They spend money irresponsibly, They burn money. All these point to one thing: lack of emotional bonding with their parents. They also have trust issues. And they are lonely.
They do many loathsome things because they have emotional issue. And they have emotional issues because their parents have emotional issues too. Their parents have lived through the cruelty of the Cultural Revolution. They were mainly focused on expanding businesses and earning more money after China has opened its economic door to the world. These children are often neglected either because their parents are very busy or because these children are not the priority of their parents' to-do list. Although most of them went to some of the best schools in their country and also in other parts of the world, their needs are only half met. Their basic needs and material needs are met but their emotional needs are not and their souls are not nourished.
How about Singapore?
Not only in China, but in Singapore as well. Many rich people have come to live on this prosperous island. Some have even converted to become Singapore citizens.
We have experienced quite a number of road accidents, especially in the downtown Bugis shopping area. These rich people, with their Ferraris, ignored traffic lights, rush through road junctions when they are not supposed to, and created tragic accidents, resulting in unnecessary deaths and injuries.
On our most reliable public transport system, the Mass Rapid Transit System (MRT System), Singaporeans also have to endure being criticised by rich foreigners for being "cheap". That's an ugly word to use for affordability.
So...
This shows that money is important but isn't everything. Children not only have to be taken care of physically but emotionally as well. We can prevent more social ills in future. The power to do it is right inside you, parents. It just takes a conscious decision to be more communicative and understanding.
